When we arrived, they told us two things: first, not to get too close to them, as they don’t like it. Second, they’re not like men. They’re second-class. A temple guard kindly offered to take a photo of us. He asked for a bigger tip. Three dollars didn’t seem enough to him. Later, we met her, and she kindly agreed to walk between my camera and the imposing columns of the Luxor Temple. She was happy. So was I. So, I reached into my pocket and offered her money. But she refused. She couldn’t accept it because, to her, we were her guests. And she didn’t even live in that city. Honestly, that didn’t seem like second-class behavior to me. They lied to us.
Second Class is a quiet yet powerful composition that captures a solitary figure walking past a monumental colonnade in Egypt. The human presence — small, humble, and in motion — is framed by towering ancient architecture, evoking themes of scale, history, and the weight of civilization.
Humberto Padrón’s lens pauses time to highlight contrast: between the everyday and the eternal, the anonymous and the iconic. The golden tones of the stone, the rhythmic repetition of the columns, and the deliberate framing give this image a timeless, cinematic quality.
This photograph resonates with those who appreciate cultural narratives, visual symbolism, and the silent dialogues between people and place.
